Drive from Addis to Debre Libanos, the site of one of Ethiopia’s most famous monasteries. We will visit the Jema River Gorge and the Sululta wetlands. We will also visit the Alehu Waterfalls.

Bird Watching

Bird spotting in the wild Harenna Forest at the southern boundary of the park. In the woodland you find not only a variety of birds, but other mammals and interesting plants, too. In the afternoon we drive back to Goba.

Beautiful Bird

At Awassa, we will visit the lake there, also known as Fikir Hayk. It is unique as it is fresh water unlike the alkaline lakes of Abiyata and Shalla. There are many species of birds here to see along the lakeside.

Day 1

Drive from Addis to Debre Libanos, the site of one of Ethiopia’s most famous monasteries. We will visit the Jema River Gorge and the Sululta wetlands. We will also visit the Alehu Waterfalls.

Day 2

Addis Abeba to Menagesha Forest. We will travel on the Addis-Ambo road west of the capital. We will hike to the summit of Mt. Wechecha. We will return to Addis Ababa on the Jimma road.

Day 3

Drive from Addis Ababa to Awash National Park. On the way we will stop at Debre Zeit and the nearby Chalalklaka Wetlands and Lake Hora. Following that we will journey to Awash Natl. Park, The Awash is one of the finest birding sites in Ethiopia’s section of the Rift Valley.

Day 4

The full day is spent at Awash visiting the various habitats and its bird species. Camel trekking to some of the sites can be arranged.

Day 5

After a brief sojourn at Koka Dam to see the Aquatic and woodland birds there, we continue to Lake Ziway which is one of Ethiopia’s most important bird habitats. Then we will drive to Lake Langano in the afternoon.

Day 6

The morning is spent visiting various birding spots around Lake Langano and the cliffs nearby. Following that we journey to Abiyata-Shalla National Park where you can witness a large number of Flamingos. In the afternoon we drive to Wondo Genet, a beautiful town with rich forests and hot springs.

Day 7

We spend the day in the forests of Wondo Genet seeing the various endemic bird species there. You can also soak in the swimming pools fed by the soothing hot springs.

Day 8

We will drive from Wondo Genet to Awassa which is about a 40km journey south into the beautiful rift valley. At Awassa, we will visit the lake there, also known as Fikir Hayk. It is unique as it is fresh water unlike the alkaline lakes of Abiyata and Shalla. There are many species of birds here to see along the lakeside.

Day 9

Awassa to Dinsho

In the morning we will visit the fish market on the shore of Lake Awassa.

Day 10

Full day is spent birding in the stunning afro-alpine setting of the Sanetti Plateau, with its striking afro-alpine flora. Drive to the top of Tullu Dimtu (4377 m) and watch the endemic birds and mammal populations. Drive back to Goba.

Day 11

Day 12

Drive from Goba to Asela, crossing the Arsi Mountains.

Day 13

Drive from Asela to Addis Ababa. Have a rest at the hot springs of Sodere, near Nazareth, a good place to spot birds again.
